“We had it all this semester. From Pulitzer Prize winner Nick Kotz with his rags to riches biography of grandfather Nathan Kallison to Daniel Handler whose children’s series put millions of young people on the path to be readers, the first part of the semester was a winner. Jean Korelitz’ novel, Admission, let us into the secrets of the college admission process, still fresh in the minds of most of our students, while providing an enjoyable reading experience. Tom Beller, author of JD Salinger: The Escape Artist, gave us the opportunity to read Salinger’s Nine Stories, a first for most of my students. Michelle Brafman’s engrossing first novel, Washing the Dead, provided Jews and non-Jews in the class an insight into Jewish practices in a story of love and forgiveness. And, Gary Shteyngart with his memoir Little Failure broke our hearts while we were laughing at his personal Russian immigrant experience. David Bruce Smith makes this unique course, now going into its seventh year, the single most memorable course in the college lives of hundreds of GW students. Just ask them.”
